Join us for sonics as Gary Stewart concludes his work for Birmingham Media Archive Project (The First Decade). Gary will build an immersive soundscape that excavates the echoes, traces and density of past and present Digbeth, responding to an area that is in flux. The work will resonate in the space from 7:30pm as a directional conversation with exterior sound using a geophone and contact mics.
Gary Stewart is an interdisciplinary artist working at the intersection of sound, moving image and computational creativity. His work examines social and political issues of identity, culture, and technology. Through the application of innovative technologies and practices he is part of a global network of collaborators who are advocates for equality, climate justice and better health through the arts, especially those from marginalised communities. Operating through a range of theoretical, fictional, and artistic frames, his work traverses media art, experimental music, and research.

Their lyricism is both sharp and vulnerable, often exploring themes of capitalism, technology, and the body.
afternoon, offline features a collection of heartfelt, playful, and rebellious spoken-word tracks over punky electronic beats, exploring Samiir’s struggle to retain a sense of self amidst the dehumanising forces of the gig economy, generative AI, and social isolation.

Join us at the BRIG Cafe for Digbeth First Friday where we are delighted to present artist Gary Stewart who will be live mixing selections from Vivid Projects media archive with stories and sounds shared by the public.
Gary Stewart is an interdisciplinary artist whose work examines social and political issues of identity, culture, and technology. He uses digital tools to challenge narratives and empower underrepresented voices. For this special performance, he takes us on an archival adventure through Birmingham, the city he was born and raised in.
The performance is the culmination of ‘We Did It Together’ a collaboration between Vivid Projects and Birmingham Libraries which has been taking place in Handsworth and Northfield. Stewart has led workshops guiding discussions on the evolution of community campaigns and how different generations can work together for social change. Drawing from shared testimonies and materials, the participants helped to shape an interactive, audio-visual collage of archival material and memories.
Gary is a seasoned artist and performer, having showcased his work far and wide – including a recent appearance on TATE’s Friday Lates – trust us, it’s not one you want to miss!
