Unmasking || Remapping: Masked Ball and Making Workshops

4–6pm; 6–10pm

Grand Union

@ Plane Structure Gallery

a landscape image of a figure dressed in a black tasseled outfit, a brightly coloured harness around their chest and shoulders, a black leather beret, and a pink mask that covers the entirety of their face. The figure has their arms raised and the tassels of the outfit fly outwards, as if in the middle of dancing. The figure is surrounded by pastel toned fabrics in shades of pink, blue, green, and yellow, that hang from the ceiling.

As part of Grand Union’s Unmasking || Remapping programme, organised in collaboration with students from the University of Birmingham, we will be holding two exciting, drop-in workshops with Babeworld and Bunny Bissoux for June’s Digbeth First Friday! You’ll be able to stop by and make masks and deco keychains from 4-6pm at Plane Structure in Minerva Works.

Then from 6-10pm we’ll be opening the dance floor for our Masked Ball, also at Plane Structure. Featuring performances by artists Naoibh McNamee and utopian_realism, as well as a live DJ set, the Masked Ball is designed as a celebratory and liberatory experience. We encourage attendees to wear the masks they made in the earlier workshop with Babeworld, and workshop materials will be left out in the space for latecomers to also create masks whilst supplies last.

The ball riffs on the themes of Babeworld x utopian_realism’s current exhibition at Grand Union and encourages us all to embrace our authentic selves.
